Welcome To A Hero’s Blog Hop!!

Welcome to A Hero’s Blog Hop!  We’re here to celebrate all the wonderful heroes in the romance novels we love, and to have a great time hopping from one blog to another.  And when you do, you have the chance to win some wonderful prizes from the over 100 bloggers and authors who are participating in the hop.

Even better, there are THREE grand prizes. You can go to EACH blog and comment with your email address and be entered to win. Yep, you can enter over 100 times!

Now what are those prizes?

1st Grand Prize: A Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet

2nd Grand Prize: A $50 Amazon or B&N Gift Card

3rd Grand Prize: The following Swag Pack!

Pretty awesome, eh?  All you have to do to win either on my blog, the other blogs, or one of the grand prizes, is to leave a comment on the blogs you drop by, which includes your email address.  That’s particularly important if you want to be eligible to win one of the grand prizes.

Now that the preliminaries are out of the way, let’s talk about the man candy, er, romance heroes.  As a romance writer, I have to confess that I love ALL my heroes.  If I didn’t love them I don’t think I could write them – makes sense, right?  So, what do I find so attractive about them?  Let’s take two heroes from the sexy contemporary romances I write with my husband under the pen name of VK Sykes.  That’s Jake Miller from Fastball and Nate Carter from Hardball, the first two books in our sports romance series about the fictional baseball team, the Philadelphia Patriots.

Jake and Nate are best friends but, on the surface, they’re really  not much alike.  Oh, sure, they’re both incredibly hot, good-looking dudes with great bodies–after all, they are professional athletes–but Jake is an all-around good guy while Nate is the classic bad boy.  While Jake plays his cards close to his chest, keeps his personal life to himself and stays out of the limelight as much as he can, Nate is pretty much the opposite.  He dates supermodels, drives fast cars, and lives life as hard as he pitches those curve balls over home plate.  Really, when you think about it, it’s almost a miracle that Jake and Nate are such good friends.

But they do share some really important qualities, ones which are necessary to every good hero:  they are loyal, decent men, they treat women with respect, and they will do whatever is required to protect the women they love from whatever threatens–even if that threat is nothing more than a big old nasty spider crawling up the wall.

Now, in both Jake and Nate’s stories, the women they love are strong and resilient and well able to take care of themselves.  But Holly and Maddie, my heroines, both run into some serious trouble, and when they do their heroes are willing to move heaven and earth to help them–even if it means breaking the rules.

Handsome, sexy, loyal, respectful, great in bed–oh, did I forget to mention that quality?  And willing to put their lives on the line for the women they love…what more could anyone ask for?  You can check out my VK Sykes website to read excerpts from both books, and to get a taste of what my two uber-sexy heroes are like.  I’m hoping you won’t be disappointed!

And now for the question!  What qualities do you think are essential to any romance hero, be it a paranormal, historical, or contemporary romance kind of guy?  Tell me one or two qualities that really work for you.  One person who comments will win a $10 Amazon gift card.

Once you comment on my blog, just follow the link below to continue on with your hop:

The World of Romance Authors – Who Influenced Me to Write and Who keeps Me Sane

Hi Vanessa! Thanks for letting me visit with you today, all the way from New Zealand. Please bear with me for the time differences. I might be a little behind you!

The most common question I get asked is how I come up with my story ideas, followed closely by what motivates me. I really don’t have any problem finding ideas for stories. Sometimes, if you’re like me, Vanessa, you live most of your life with characters in your head. It’s crowded with loads of different characters all screaming to be heard. Sometimes it’s hard to order the characters’ traits, fears, and the conflicts they find themselves in.

Sometimes the answer to ‘where do I get my stories from’ leads to a discussion about what’s happening in the world around me. I often hear some lyrics, or watch a movie, world events, or something that happened to friends in real life triggers something in my head. I think about what would be different about this in the Regency era—and voila a story idea germinates.

However, these sources of inspiration help me with stories ideas. So what inspired me to write in the first place and what keeps me writing?

Well, it has to be other authors! It’s my love of reading romance that sparked the desire to write it. Especially historical romance, but really I read across all genres.

I remember crying, and laughing and smiling after reading a Penny Jordan book; I decided on the spot that was what I wanted to do. I didn’t really know how to start so I joined RWNZ and RWA and began to learn.

Now that I’m a published author, I still find inspiration through other authors. Reading a great book still sends me straight to my computer to write my own stories. Also being able to dive into other author’s characters gives my head a well needed rest.

I love that we all have different voices and different strengths in our writing. I’m constantly learning from other authors, how to be a better writer.

If you’re wondering which authors influenced me to write INVITATION TO SCANDAL, there are many. However fellow author Elise Rome always told me to give credit where it’s due.

So, these are just a few of the authors I return to again and again who I can count on to awe and inspire me, my auto-buys: (including Vanessa Kelly of course!)

Gaelen Foley

Nicole Jordan

Anne Mallory

Madeline Hunter

Mary Jo Putney

Jennifer Ashley

Even if you’re not a writer, you likely have a list of authors who continually awe you when you read their books. Who are your favorites that you would passionately recommend to any fellow romance reader?

One random commenter will be chosen to win a copy of my newest book, INVITATION TO SCANDAL (open internationally)!

PLUS: Find out how to win the INVITATION TO ROMANCE Book Tour Grand Prize of a $200 Gift Card from Amazon or B&N PLUS 30+ ‘signed by the author’ romance novels by visiting www.bronwenevans.com

There will be a one WORD hidden in each blog post [WHO] in brackets (the word ‘WHO’ is the first clue from Shana Galen’s post on 26th April). There are 30 words altogether. These words will spell a paragraph related to my May release INVITATION TO SCANDAL.

Zounds!  Vanessa, here.  Bronwen, what a great contest!  Readers, be sure to check out Bronwen’s website.  And don’t forget to answer her question in today’s blog for a chance to win a copy of AN INVITATION TO SCANDAL.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick’s Day Blog Hop!

Happy St. Paddy’s Day, folks!  Thanks for joining me on the ginormous blog hop to celebrate the wearing of the green.  Along with dozens of authors and bloggers, I’m celebrating the day by participating in this fun event. Each participating author will be giving away a prize like a swag pack, gift cards, ebooks, print books, and so much more.

PLUS We have TWO Grand Prizes for TWO different winners!

Grand Prize 1: Winner’s Choice of a Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet
Grand Prize 2: Winner’s Choice of a $90 Amazon or Barnes & Noble Gift Card

Isn’t that exciting? So what do you have to do? Visit the participating websites today and comment on as many as you want. The grand prize winners will be chosen at random from the commenters – meaning you can comment on EACH blog – meaning 120 entries to the grand prize.

So let’s start the hop right here, shall we?

What does St. Paddy’s Day mean to you?  With a last name like Kelly, one would think I would go all out on this proud Irish day.  Well…sometimes, is my qualified answer.  I’ve done bar crawls in New York City on St. Paddy’s Day – not for the faint of heart, btw – and I’ve also spent the day doing not much more than wearing a green shirt.  In recent years, my husband and I have taken to spending it with my dad and stepmother and a few friends, enjoying my dad’s awesome corned beef and cabbage. Sounds kind of low key, but we do imbibe a little Irish whiskey on occasion, and generally have a great time.

But one of my favorite things about the day stems from my childhood.  Each year my dad would bring home Irish Potato candies on St. Patrick’s Day.

Man, were they little nuggets of goodness!  So for my readers and visitors to the blog today, I’m sharing a recipe for these delightful little candies, care of Baked Bree:

Ingredients

  • 1/2 stick of butter softened
  • 1/2 brick of cream cheese softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 cups confectioners sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups sweetened coconut
  • 2 Tablespoons cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Beat together butter and cream cheese. Slowly add the confectioners sugar.
  2. Add the vanilla.
  3. Add the coconut and mix until combined.
  4. You may want to chill the coconut mixture a little before you roll them. I like to use a small ice cream scoop. These are really rich, so you want them to be small.
  5. Roll the coconut mixture into a ball.
  6. Roll the coconut mixture into the cinnamon and put on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  7. Keep the Irish Potatoes in the fridge.

And for my readers and visitors today, I’ll also be giving away a copy of three books – my new VK Sykes contemporary romance, Fastball, which will be released next week in digital format, AND a print copy of my historical romance anthology, An Invitation To Sin.  And finally, I’ll be giving away a beautiful trade paperback edition of historical romance author Maggie Robinson’s new book, Master of Sin.

What do you have to do to win these books?  Just tell me how you like to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day.  One person who comments will win all three books, AND have a chance to win one of the grand prizes.  After you post here, hop on over to Carrie Ann Ryan’s blog for links to all the other authors, and to continue the hop.

Good luck!
