YUKON’S BOOK CLUB

Yukon (he’s in the handsome fellow in the fur coat) and I would like to welcome you to his book club. Every few weeks, this discerning Norwegian Elkhound will post a review of what he’s currently reading. After much consideration, Yukon has established a rating system that he thinks will be very helpful to his readers. Each book that he reviews will be scored with a rating of:
1 to 5 Sloppy Kisses
Just between you and me, don’t expect to see anything less than a 4 or 5. Yukon is a bit of a softie, and he hates to hurt people’s feelings. But he has excellent taste, so whatever book he does recommend you’ll be sure to enjoy.
Yukon’s Latest read:
Reckless Abandon, by Stuart Woods
Yukon has been drooling (literally) to get his paws on this book for a long time. Reckless Abandon brings together our boy’s favorite cop-turned-lawyer hero, Stone Barrington, with a fun cast of characters from previous Woods’ books. Along with Stone’s long-time partner Dino Bacchetti and mob boss Eduardo Bianchi, the line-up includes CIA spook Lance Cabot, mass murderer Trini Rodriguez, and Orchid Beach police chief Holly Barker. But the character that really got Yukon salivating was Holly’s amazing Doberman pinscher, Daisy.
Daisy is no ordinary dog. She’s been superbly trained to guard Holly and whoever else Holly tells her to, and she takes her job very seriously. The bad guys more than meet their match when they try to get by the ever-alert Daisy. One even comes away with a hole torn out of the seat of his pants. Yukon didn’t get past the first fifty pages before he realized he was in love.
But the rest of the book is pretty good, too, even though Yukon was upset that Daisy gets sent back to Florida (and off screen) for too long. The complicated plot involving the FBI, the CIA, and the mob contains Woods’ usual blend of crisp action, wry humor, and the sex that inevitably occurs when a beautiful woman crosses the commitment-challenged Stone’s path. Holly enlists Stone’s help in tracking down Trini, who killed a dozen people on her turf by putting bombs in a pair of caskets at a funeral. Trini’s in New York, but he’s being protected by FBI agents, who want him to help them catch a cell of Arab terrorists.
Plausibility isn’t the book’s strongest suit, but if a reader is looking for non-stop action and a highly-entertaining read (like Yukon prefers), you can’t go wrong with Stuart Woods and Stone Barrington. Knowing that Holly Barker and Daisy will return, both in Barrington books and Holly’s own “Orchid” series, makes Yukon a very happy Norwegian Elkhound.
