Guest Author: Manda Collins & Giveaway!!

I’m always excited when my good friend Manda Collins visits my blog.  Manda writes witty Regency-set historical romance with a dash of mystery.  Her next book, Why Dukes Say I Do, just received a prestigious Top Pick from RT Book Reviews.  Dukes will released on July 30th.

But Manda has a new novella out tomorrow, and it’s another of her witty, emotionally appealing stories.  She’s here to talk with us about it!

How does your novella fit into The Ugly Ducklings Trilogy

The Perks of Being a Beautyis the story of Miss Amelia Snowe, who is the nemesis of Cecily, Juliet and Maddie in the Ugly Ducklings trilogy. In Book 3 of the trilogy, How to Entice an Earl, we see Amelia coming to the realization that she’s been behaving rather badly during her reign as the toast of the ton. Well, in The Perks we see Amelia in seriously straitened circumstances. Her mother has died, leaving Amelia not only penniless, but also owing a great deal to her mother’s creditors. Forced to make her own living, Amelia has become the companion to a wealthy cit’s daughter. It’s a far cry from being able to wind the gentlemen of the ton around her little finger!

Your heroine is looking for redemption.  Why do you think that particular theme resonates so well with readers?

You know, I’m not all that sure it does. I know that readers have a ton of love for redeemed rakes and villains, but I think it takes a bit more for them to forgive a villainous heroines. I’m not sure if it’s because most romance readers are women, and we tend to be harder on our own sex, or what. Still, I do think there is much to touch readers hearts in this kind of story. We’ve all done things that we aren’t particularly proud of, and by watching a character like Amelia make amends to the people she’s harmed, we see the possibility for our own redemption–whether it’s harsh words to a loved one or something more serious.

Hopefully, after seeing how truly repentant Amelia is, readers will begin to root for her.

The book trailer for The Perks of Being a Beauty is awesome.  How did you come up for the idea for it?

I’ve been a fan of the Dos Equis commercials about “The Most Interesting Man in the World” since they first came out. And I’ve been thinking about fun promo ideas for my upcoming series, but I knew that the only character who could pull off “The Most Interesting” theme was Amelia, who is somewhat larger than life in the Ducklings books. Coming up with her character traits was the most fun I’ve had in a long long time!  Readers, you can watch this adorable trailer here.

What’s up next in Manda’s writing world?

On July 30, the first book in my new Wicked Widows trilogy, Why Dukes Say I Do, will be released. I’m really excited about this new series and seeing how readers respond to it. I’ve just gotten my review from RT Book Reviews and was floored to see it was not only a Top Pick, but my hero Trevor (a real dish, if I may say so myself!) was named a Knight In Shining Silver (or K.I.S.S.) hero! “Witty and smart, Collins’ prose flows smoothly as she merges a charming, compassionate love story with gothic suspense….Add strong pacing and depth of emotion and there’s no doubt this is a winner.”

And I can’t wait to read it!  For my readers today, Manda is graciously giving away three copies of The Perks of Being a Beauty.  As someone who’s also written a book about a bad girl reformed, I’d like to talk about that.  Can you think of any heroines from books, a TV show, or movies who redeemed herself?  Three people who comment will win a copy of Manda’s novella!

Some Exciting News!!

I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve been invited to join an absolutely wonderful group of romance writers on their blog, The Sisterhood of the Jaunty Quills.  It’s one of the best group blogs in the romance blogosphere, counting uber-talented writers like Shana Galan, Kristin Higgins, Mia Marlowe, and Robyn DeHart among its members.

I’ll be blogging twice a month with the JQs, and I’ll be linking to JQ posts fairly frequently from now on–which is good news for my readers because those gals know how to have a good time!  The JQs also host guest visits from your favorite romance writers (with giveaways!), so you’re going to want to stop by on a regular basis.

In fact, why don’t you stop over right now and say hello!

Guest Author: Kate Noble & Giveaway!!

I’m thrilled to have the awesomely talented Kate Noble visiting the blog today.  Kate is the national bestselling author of the acclaimed Blue Raven Series, earning starred reviews from Library Journal and Publisher’s Weekly (Follow My Lead), as well as a spot on the Best Romance list from Kirkus Reviews (The Summer of You) and a RITA nomination for best Regency Historical Romance (Revealed).  She’s also a member of the writing staff for the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a modern-day adaption of Pride and Prejudice.

Let’s find out what’s going on in Kate’s world, shall we?

You studied TV and film in college, and eventually worked in that profession.  Why the switch to romance writing?

It’s not a switch!  I’ve always loved romance novels, and I’ve always loved TV, so I decided to have a career in both. I write novels, but I also work for the small and smaller screen, my latest project being The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, the hit web series retelling of Pride and Prejudice(You can visit Lizzie’s world on YouTube, folks)

How does your background in that visual medium help (or hinder) your writing?

I think it helps, honestly.  It makes me think differently about how I write my novels.  It make me think about what would be the best setting for a scene, the iconography of one place versus another.  It also makes me think about chemistry, and how much can be said without saying anything.

What can you tell us about your new book?  Is it part of a series?

My new book is set in the same Blue Raven world as my previous novels, but very much stand alone.  Bridget Forrester longs to meet a gentleman who doesn’t mention her beautiful sister (Sarah, heroine of If I Fall) upon shaking her hand. But since being branded a shrew after a disastrous social season, Bridget knows she’s lucky to even have a man come near her. It’s enough to make a lady flee the country…

So Bridget heads to Venice for music lessons with the renowned Italian composer Vincenzo Carpenini, with whom she’s been corresponding. But not only is Carpenini not expecting her, he doesn’t even remember her! His friend, theater owner Oliver Merrick, does, though. And one look into her tantalizing green eyes has him cursing his impulsive letter-writing, which brought her across the continent. Yet before Merrick can apologize, Carpenini has ordered her away.

Little does either man know that they will soon be embroiled in a wager that will require the beautiful Miss Forrester’s help—or that there’ll be far more at stake in this gamble than money…

What’s next in Kate’s writing world?

I am very excited about my next trilogy, the first of which will be out in 2014.  I’m also working on a comic book with Javier Grill-Marxuach (The Middleman) and artist Kel McDonald, as well as the Welcome to Sanditon web series.  Other than that, I have a couple of pet projects in the pipeline, that I hope to make see the light of day.

Wow!  Your plate is full with some very cool stuff, Kate!  Thanks for taking the time to be with us.  Readers, Kate is graciously giving away a copy today of If I Fall.  Since her latest book involves music and composers, let’s talk about that.  What’s your favorite music to listen to?  One person who comments will win a copy of If I Fall.

And don’t forget to check Kate’s website for more info on Let It Be Me, her new book.

Guest Author: Monica Burns & Giveaway!!

One of my favorite people on the planet – yes, the planet – is visiting with us today.  She’s  Monica Burns, and she writes award-winning, bestselling historical and paranormal romance.  Monica has won the RT Book Reviews Reviewers Choice Award and the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence.  In addition to writing great – and spicy! – romance, she’s also a wonderful person.

I’m going to turn things over to Monica, who has a lovely blog about friendship and the romance community.

Do you have any idea how many times I’ve started this blog post now? Seven. Seven different openings and now that I’m on the eighth effort, I’m feeling desperate. Well that resonates, because as an author I *am* desperate. You might ask why? Well, like all creative types, we just want to be loved. Seriously, we want people to love our books and love us for writing those books. Any author who disagrees with me, well I’m not gonna believe them.

Whether you’re a fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, NASCAR, football,  or whatever, you’re going to meet people you connect with because you both like the same thing. The romance community is the same, and yet I firmly believe we have a fundamental difference. We love to read about love, and we all know that love is the most powerful emotion of all. As a result of that binding love, friendships develop among readers who might have met only one time in person, but communicate almost daily with online.

For instance, I consider Vanessa a close friend even though our friendship is a long distance one. I honestly don’t know why she chose me to be her friend, but she did (Vanessa, here.  Because Monica has a huge heart and she’s funny!). She listens to me whine, gives advice, offers emotional support, and makes me laugh. All of the things a friend is supposed to do. I reciprocate when she needs me, although that’s hardly ever.

Vanessa rarely rants, but I’m always there to support her when she does. Vanessa is one of four people in my most intimate inner circle of friends. You know the kind; they’re the friends who will call you on something you know better than to say. The friends who empathize, are ready to storm the castle with you and have your back.

Friendship is one of the strongest threads running through the romance reading community. A few years back, on a now defunct blog, I talked about the friendships I’ve built over the years. Friendships I wouldn’t have if it weren’t for the Internet and the romance community. I can tell you right now that I would never have met Vanessa, Becke, Keri or Rosie if it weren’t for the romance community and the Internet.

So, have you met another lover of romance books via the Internet? Have you met in person? Do you chat daily? Weekly?

Vanessa, here.  Thank you so much for that wonderful post, my friend!  And you know what else is wonderful?  Monica’s new historical, Love’s Revenge.  Take a look at this awesome cover!

Love’s Revenge

All her life, Sophie’s tried to earn her father’s love to no avail. Even her one chance for happiness was crushed beneath his tyrannical thumb, leaving her firmly on the shelf at forty-one. Sophie accepts her fate until she impulsively uses her father’s criminal activities to escape a life of servitude and right a wrong at the same time. She never really expected the Devil of Devlyn to actually accept her rash proposal, and she certainly hadn’t planned on falling in love with a younger man.

When Quentin Blackwell, Earl of Devlyn, discovered the woman he loved was carrying another man’s child, he refused to marry her. In retaliation, her father ruined Devlyn. When Sophie Hamilton, the man’s eldest daughter, comes to him with an unexpected offer, Devlyn seizes the chance for vengeance. What he doesn’t bargain on is how revenge could cost him the one thing he wants the most. Sophie’s love.

Sounds enticing, doesn’t it?  For my readers today, Monica is giving away a copy of the book.  And I’m giving away a copy of one of my historical romances, too.  Just answer Monica’s question about friendship for a chance to win Love’s Revenge and my first book, Mastering The Marquess!

I’ve been hinting about my new Regency historical series with Kensington Publishing for a few months now, so I’m really thrilled to be able to announce titles and release dates.  The series will be called Renegade Royals, and it’s about four sexy alpha males who also happen to be the illegitimate offspring of Britain’s royal princes.  These four roguish cousins will get into all kinds of scrapes and adventures as work they claim their rightful place in society, and win the hands of the strong-willed women who love them.

There will be two novellas and four books released in a two year period.

Lost in a Royal Kiss will be released in December, 2013, and is a digital novella that will introduce some of the main characters and set up the premise for the series.

A Royal’s Rules for Love is book one in the series, and will be released in both print and digital in January, 2014.

Confessions of a Royal Bridegroom is book two in the series, and will be released in both print and digital in April, 2014.

The second digital novella will be released in December 2014, and books three and four will follow early in 2015.

So, let’s get straight to those stories!  When I was a kid, our family often celebrated New Year’s Eve with the people in our neighborhood.  There was a lot of great food and champagne (for the adults, of course) and the kids had fun hanging out.  But the best part was the actual ringing in of the holiday at midnight.  My parents gave us funny hats to wear, and noisemakers and pots and pans to bang as loudly as we wanted.  We’d run outside, shrieking and yelling and banging on the pots as loud as we could.  If anyone on the street was asleep, we surely woke them up!

So tell me all about it:  what are some of your  memories of New Year’s from your younger days.  Did your family celebrate by doing anything special?  One person who comments will win a copy of Fastball, one of my VK Sykes contemporary romances, and a $10 Amazon gift card.  Don’t forget to leave your email address in the comment thread to be eligible for one of the grand prizes!

FASTBALL

Baseball reporter Maddie Leclair has spent years chasing her dream job—covering the major league team, the Philadelphia Patriots.  Now that she’s landed the assignment she intends to make it big, with feature articles on the front page of every sports section in the country. But to do that, she needs to score an interview with the most private and elusive athlete in baseball, Patriots’ superstar Jake Miller.

On the rebound from a devastating injury that knocked him out of play for a season, Jake has a lot to prove to the suits in the head office.  He’s sure he still has what it takes to win, and he’ll be damned if he lets anything get in the way of his climb back to the top of the charts.

The last thing Jake needs is a pushy female reporter distracting him.  But one look at Maddie and he knows he’s in trouble.  He finds himself trying for a different kind of play, one that involves bedrooms and not baseball stats.  Sleeping together could damage both their careers, and Maddie is all about saying no.  But when it comes to the game of love, Jake is playing to win.

PS.  Hardball, the sequel to Fastball, is now FREE on Amazon, B & N, Kobo, and most other retailers.  So jump on over and download the book – what have you got to lose?!  After you’ve done that, just click on this Blog Hop link and start hopping away!

Guest Author: Robyn DeHart & Giveaway!

I’m so pleased to have romance writer extraordinaire Robyn DeHart on the blog today.  Robyn writes sexy historical romance, with lots of adventure and intrigue.  Her books have finaled in bunches of contests and she’s won a number of them, too.  Let’s ask Robyn to tell us about her latest book.

A Little Bit Wicked, your first book in the Forbidden Love Series for Entangled Publishing, is now available. How did you come up with the idea for this series? We’ve probably had at least one forbidden love in our lives – what’s the attraction?

Thanks for having me today, Vanessa! Yes, forbidden love is such an attraction. I think it’s the taboo of it that draws me in. The series actually rolled right out of this first book, A Little Bit Wicked. I knew I wanted to create a series and well, one of the main elements to Vivian and Marcus’s story is that she’s older than him (and also a ruined lady). I knew a relationship between them would be forbidden. So I grabbed onto that element as a hook for the entire series and it everything fell into place. A Little Bit Sinful is next and well, those who have read A Little Bit Wicked know that Marcus’s younger sister, Clarissa is embroiled in a scandal…we get her story in that book. And the third…well, readers will just have to wait and see.

Can you tell us something about A Little Bit Wicked? I love the idea of a heroine known as The Paragon!

Thank you. It was funny how that idea came to me. Part of my process when I’m creating stories is that I spend a lot of time thinking about the relationship between the hero and heroine. I get an idea for one of them and then I think about who is the perfect person for them to fall in love with and what are the reasons that make them the worst person to fall in love with and I go from there. I knew what type of person Vivian was, I knew she was prim and proper and that that was of upmost importance to her and I knew why, I knew she had this secret past that she was working quite hard to hide. That one secret sort of snowballed into her being the secret keeper and thus the Paragon was born. I liked the idea of a “cleaner” of sorts in Victorian society – we all know how many scandals were flying around back then. Surely there was someone who could help smooth out the edges of nasty gossip. She was a fun character to write! And creating her match in Marcus was even more fun. He was so intent on ruffling her feathers, on breaking through that prim and proper exterior to find the passionate woman beneath…the chemistry lit up my computer.

You also have a new series coming out from NAL. What can you tell us about it? How does this series differ from your Forbidden Love Series?

Oh yes, I’m so excited about the NAL series! I’ve wanted to sell that first book, The Secrets of Mia Danvers, for a while and I believe I found a great home for it with NAL (thanks to my amazing agent, Kevan Lyon). I’m never great at describing a book, but I can share the back cover blurb because it’s already up for pre-order on Amazon.

A lone witness finds her protector…

Since losing her sight in a childhood accident, Mia Danvers has resided in a small cottage on the vast Carrington estate. Thought to be dead, Mia lives a life of virtual seclusion—until one night, while walking home, she happens upon a horrendous crime.

Alex Foster, Eighth Duke of Carrington, lives according to society’s expectations for him. He’s never met the woman who lives in the cottage at the edge of his property. But when she arrives at his door in the pouring rain terrified and claiming she has witnessed a murder, she seizes his attention.

Mia is determined to help the authorities track down the culprit, even though the only person willing to accept her aid is the handsome, arrogant duke. Working closely together proves difficult as Mia’s beauty and independence tempts Alex to ignore convention and follow his desire. But what neither of them know is that this murderer has struck before in Whitechapel, taunting the British press only to vanish—a ruthless killer who knows that Mia is the only living witness to his crime…

Writing a blind character was a challenge, to be sure, but also really exciting. So far everyone who has read the book loves her and so I feel like I did my job. The series will deal with what happens after the Whitechapel murders, asking the question, what if Jack the Ripper kept on killing. So how this series differs from my Forbidden Love series is that the NAL series is for one, much longer books, and secondly where the Forbidden Love series focuses on the hero and heroine and them falling in love while the NAL series focuses on that same thing, but those people falling in love amidst the backdrop of a terrifying murder investigation. The NAL series is darker and more gritty, everything you would except from a book featuring the notorious Jack the Ripper.

Now for what I call my survivor question – if you were stranded on a deserted island with the love of your life, what two luxury items would you bring with you?

Okay this is probably cheating, but I’m going to say a magic toiletry bag that refills itself as needed, filled with toothbrushes and toothpaste and shampoo and soap. So that’s one item and then the other would have to be my fully loaded kindle so I would never run out of wonderful romance novels to read.

Cheating is definitely allowed on my island, Robyn!  For my readers today, Robyn is giving away a copy of her new book.  Let’s talk about secrets–are you good at keeping them or bad?  Did you ever have a secret you simply had to keep, but found it almost impossible to do so?  One person who comments will win a copy of A Little Bit Wicked.

And don’t forget:  today is the last day to participate in the Holiday Gifts of Love Blog Hop.

Click on this link to get to my original post and start hopping.  Since there are over 200 authors and bloggers giving away prizes, you’ll be glad you did!
