SECRETS FOR SEDUCING A ROYAL BODYGUARD

The Renegade Royals

 VANESSA KELLY

In matters of desire, he’s the perfect teacher…

“Full of intrigue, emotion and sensuality.”

–Katharine Ashe

In this witty, sensual new series, Vanessa Kelly introduces the Renegade Royals, illegitimate heirs to the throne who are finding their rightful places in society…

Accomplished spy Aden St. James prefers to stay away from the frivolous ton, especially after the way his mother was used by the Prince Regent. But his latest mission compels him to guard unconventional, vibrant Lady Vivien Shaw. Rescuing her from kidnappers was easy. Resisting her beauty is not. Duty demands he keep an eye on her—and naturally, his lips soon follow. For someone who views entanglements as a weakness, this is pure, delicious folly…

Though grateful for Aden’s help, Vivien has secrets she must keep hidden. Yet with her abductors still at large, she needs Aden’s protection almost as much as she craves his touch…

Pretty cool, eh?  I am SO excited about this book!  And in case you’re interested, it’s available for pre-order on Amazon and Barnes & Noble! <g>

The Next Big Thing!

My good pal Marilyn Bryant, author of A Summer in Europe, tagged me to take part in this blogging hop-along, and I thought it sounded like fun.  I’ll answer some questions about my current work in progress (WIP), and then tag five other authors to do the same thing on their blogs next week.

So, here goes on my Next Big Thing:

What is your working title of your book?  A Royal Seduction.

Where did the idea come from for the book?  From reading histories and biographies about the British Royals during the Regency period.

What genre does your book fall under?  Regency-set historical romance.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?  I’ve already got them picked out.  Hugh Jackman would play my hero, and the heroine would be played by Piper Perabo.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?  The illegitimate son of the Prince Regent, who is also a spy for the British Crown, must protect a young noblewoman (a beautiful and brilliant cardsharp) from kidnapping and forced marriage to a Russian prince.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?  This is the first book in my new series, The Renegade Royals, for Kensington Publishing.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?  Four months, which included the beginning of revisions.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?  It’s a sexy Regency historical, with some adventure and a spy for a hero, so I’d say it’s similar to what Shana Galen writes.  But I also have quite a bit of humor and Regency social settings in my book too, so I think readers who like books by Katharine Ashe will like it, too.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?  I read a wonderful biography of the Prince Regent, the eldest son and heir of George III.  Like most of his brothers – who were a pretty scandalous lot – he had at least one or two illegitimate children.  All told, the brothers probably had close to twenty illegitimate offspring, some of whom were never identified.  I thought it would be pretty cool to write a series about those children who never emerged from the shadows of history.  They were the sons of princes, and yet had such murky backgrounds.  This WIP is my story of Aden, the Prince Regent’s bastard son.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?  I really love the heroine and think she’s a very interesting character.  She’s funny and sweet, and a total math genius.  Her family is a nightmare, always spending themselves into massive debt, and Vivien has to use her math skills at the gambling tables of the ton to keep her family afloat.  She was a lot of fun to write.

And now I get to tag a few awesome author friends too, who’ll be posting about their latest projects on their blogs next Wednesday, Dec. 5th. Can’t wait to hear what they’re working on!!

Cynthia Eden, author of Angel in Chains

Monica Burns, author of A Bluestocking Christmas

Kris Kennedy, author of Deception

Manda Collins, author of How To Romance A Rake

Theresa Romain, author of Season For Surrender

Readers, be sure to check out these talented ladies next week and find out what they’re working on!

Guest Author: Katharine Ashe & Giveaway!

I’m SO excited to have historical romance author Katharine Ashe visiting my blog today.  Katharine writes the most gorgeous books, and she’s got the readers, the awards and the accolades to prove it.  On top of that she’s a truly lovely lady – I’m a huge fan, as you can probably tell!

Like many traditionally published authors, Katharine is also venturing into the world of indie publishing.  She’s got a new book out and she’s here to tell us all about it in a truly delightful blog post.

Ghosts

I love romance. Like many of you, I am a romance addict. But there’s something else I must admit to adoring too.

Ghost stories.

Let me be clear: I am not a big fan of monster horror. With a few notable exceptions, I steer clear of stories that are designed to scare the tuna salad out of me. In fact, that’s an allusion to one of my favorite monster stories ever, Leonardo, the Terrible Monster by the brilliant Mo Willems, which is a children’s book. See my point? I’ve a far too nervous soul to welcome truly frightful creatures into my imagination.

The adult monster stories that I do love are always stories of deep emotion and even sometimes a degree of tragedy, for instance, the love story between Joss Whedon’s Buffy and Angel, or Mary Shelley’s gorgeously profound Frankenstein. I adore those tales not for the terror and violence, but for the pathos — the deep, powerfully human experiences the monsters have, and their achingly real desire to be human themselves.

Why do they long to be human when as monsters they have such immense power over mere humans? It’s simple.

They want to be human so that they won’t be alone in the world.

I love to be alone, to spend solitary days writing or taking long walks on the beach or in the woods, pondering, dreaming, you name it. But being alone is different from true loneliness. And true loneliness breaks my heart each time I encounter it. We humans are social creatures. Loving creatures. Most of us need other people because in order to live we need to love and be loved.

Which is why when it comes to spooky, I am very fond of ghost stories. There’s just something about that impossibly intimate yet uncrossable boundary between the living and the once-living that tears at my heart and makes it ache.

I don’t think I’m alone in this. Take Ghost, the smash hit movie from 1990. Why was it so popular? Well, it’s a romance (of a sort) starring a very famous trio of actors (one of them with really, really nice abs and pecs, and I’m not talking about Demi). But it’s also the story of her grief and loneliness, and of his pain for her. Their love is simply too powerful to release so swiftly, especially when she is still in danger.

That’s why I love ghost stories. A story of danger combined with deep emotion and the sheer tragedy of that profound divide between those who love each other but can’t do anything about it grips me like nothing else. Every time I read or see that kind of story, I can’t stop thinking about it. I want to fix it! I write romance, for gosh sakes. I need happy endings! I want love to triumph over tragedy EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Which is why I wrote Captive Bride, my Regency ghost novel.

Miss Beatrice Sinclaire and Lord Peter Cheriot, the man she has hopelessly loved in secret for years, fight against time to save Bea from a terrible curse. A ghost with a tortured soul has trapped them in a haunted castle, and he is demanding that Bea marry him by All Hallows’ Eve. But dashing Lord Cheriot knows a thing or two about heartache, too, and he’s not about to let Bea come to harm.

Spooky? A bit.

Nail biting? One or two.

Romantic? You betcha.

Sexy? Delectably.

A great big happily-ever-after at the end? Ohh, YES.

Award-winning author Katharine Ashe is the author of six novels and one novella set in the Regency era and a professor of medieval history. This is her first (and possibly only) ghost novel (she only has ten nails to bite off, after all).

What is your favorite way to be spooked? Ghosts? Goblins? Vampires? Werewolves? The grocery bill? Katharine will send a copy of Captive Bride in e-book format to one randomly chosen commenter.

Happy Halloween!

Guest Author: Katharine Ashe & Giveaway!

I’m so very thrilled to be hosting Katharine Ashe on my blog today.  Katharine is an award-winning author of historical romance who was described by Booklist in 2010 as “one of the new stars of historical romance.”  She’s both a talented writer and a truly wonderful person, and she’s here today to tell us about her new book.  How To Be A Proper Lady has already been getting phenomenal reviews, and is an Amazon.com Editors’ Choice for Best Book of the Month.

Without further ado, let’s talk to Katharine!

It seems we never lose our love for pirates and privateers – and no wonder, with the likes of Captain Jack Sparrow as a role model!  But How To Be A Proper Lady has several unusual twists.  Your hero is not your average English aristocrat or even your standard pirate, and your heroine is herself a privateer.  How did you come up with such an unusual idea?

It’s one of those Crazy Author things, Vanessa. The hero of How To Be a Proper Lady, Jin Seton, presented himself to me pretty much fully formed so I hadn’t much of a choice about who he was.

I’d just started writing Captured by a Rogue Lord. The hero of that book, Alex Savege, begins his story as a Robin Hood-style pirate who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Jin was Alex’s first lieutenant, and from the moment he spoke to Alex in the opening chapter of that book he told me who he was: not fully English, but a man with a brutal history who now sought atonement for the violent deeds of his past. I loved him. And I knew within minutes who his heroine would be: a strong, adventuresome woman, Viola Carlyle, the girl that had been abducted by her smuggler father fifteen years earlier and that everyone presumed dead.

Fortunately, Jin liked that idea. A lot. He told me he would find Viola and bring her home to her noble family. Of course, he didn’t count on Viola’s stubborn determination not to do his bidding, or his desire for her. Or hers for him! And that’s where the fun began…

In addition to being a fabulous romance writer, you’re also a history professor.  Did you draw on any models from the history books in creating the characters of Jinan and Viola?

Thank you! Yes, indeedy, the histories I read definitely inform my characters. Sometimes I get ideas from history books for specific things (like the captive English brides in my In the Arms of a Marquess), and sometimes the historical places and subjects I’m reading about more generally inspire characters or plots. I’m very fortunate that my husband and his friends happen to be the world’s foremost scholars of Caribbean history in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, so I’m always reading their books and talking with them about it. It was a thrilling and dangerous time! I don’t need to invent anything; I just borrow it from history.  (Vanessa, here.  What a cool profession for your hubby–and very handy for a historical romance writer!)

Jin and Viola presented themselves to me after I’d been reading a lot about the shipping routes of the British Empire, and the movements of merchants, navies and slaves across the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Jin’s unsparing past and Viola’s profession came straight from my studies. And their sizzling romance? Well, that came from who they were in their hearts and what they each dreamed of becoming.

When you were writing this book, did anything surprise you? Any strange bits of research? Did the characters take you in unexpected directions?

Oh, yes! They took me to the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, which admittedly I’d anticipated. But what I hadn’t understood before was they couldn’t just sail down the U.S. coast from Boston; air and ocean currents required ships to sail east first, to Bermuda, then south. Also, because Jin does manage to haul Viola back to England and return her to her aristocratic roots, I learned alongside my poor sailor heroine a whole lot about the accomplishments expected of a proper lady in that society. Poor Viola! I suffered with her through every lesson in French, watercolor painting and etiquette that she was forced to endure.

Let’s say you were kidnapped by a ravishing pirate and taken to a deserted island. What two luxury items would you beg him to let you take, to make your stay that much more enjoyable?

I will respond to this question when my heart reenters my body. I mean, really, where does a girl I begin??? Satin sheets and a refrigerator filled with champagne!

And here’s the blurb for How To Be A Proper Lady:

The rules of being a proper lady

1) Never take steps greater than six inches apart
2) Never look boldly at a gentleman
3) And never, ever kiss a man who is not your fiancé…

But beautiful, bold Viola Carlyle doesn’t care about the rules. And she desperately wants to kiss the notoriously tempting Captain Jin Seton, the man who brought her kicking and fighting back to English society. Kidnapped as a child, now she longs to return to that life of freedom where she was able to live—and love—as she wished.

Having hunted Viola for two years, Jin Seton has finally found his good luck—for by finding Viola his oldest, deepest debt will at last be paid. And although he has vowed not to let her win his heart, this very improper lady might finally be the one who tames him.

Thanks for the great interview, Katharine.  I have to say, How To Be A Proper Lady has moved to the top of my TBR pile!  Readers, be sure to check out Katharine’s website for all the details and buy links, and to read an excerpt.
